Based in St. John’s, NL, Canada, Kirk Newhook is a guitarist/composer/educator and industry professional. Kirk’s repertoire of cover music is substantial and varied in genres, but he mostly plays his original compositions. With a B.A. in Music (Jazz) from St. F.X.U., his compositions draw inspiration from many genres including jazz, blues, rock, folk, country, Cajun, Latin and world. His unique and varied repertoire can be harmonically and rhythmically challenging to play yet remains melodic and accessible. Odd-meter earworms anyone? He’s performed many of his compositions publicly in various ensembles over the years but has never released them commercially.

Well, that’s changing! With over 30 years of compositions Kirk has started the process of reworking arrangements, writing new compositions, and rediscovering the joy of playing music. His debut album Some of the Parts of the Story will be released in May 2023.

Kirk’s goal is to make his music available and easily accessible for sync licensing opportunities and to that end he’s been researching the industry to ensure that he and his music are sync-ready.

Kirk taught guitar lessons for 18 years, and founded the Wreckhouse International Jazz & Blues Festival, serving as the Executive & Artistic Director for eight years and continuing to serve as a board member. He was nominated for MusicNL’s Industry Professional Award twice and for the NL Arts Council Music Educator of Year Award. In 2017 he was inducted into the Wreckhouse Jazz & Blues Hall of Fame as a Builder in the NL music scene.
