The Art of Storytelling: The work of music supervisors in Film, streaming and TV

How can you connect your music to the people who need it? And how can your music help supervisors tell great stories in their film, streaming, and TV projects? That’s what we’ll explore today.

Join our panelists as they discuss how they navigate creative challenges—like finding the exact piece of music that captures the emotion of a scene—as well as practical challenges such as budget, legal clearance, copyright confirmation, and timing. They’ll also touch on “soft” factors, including managing stakeholder expectations, navigating interpersonal politics around music usage, and how you can effectively support the process.

who can help you get your music to the right people? Sync agents, Music Libraries, labels, publishers and new tech

Nothing is more important to getting your music licensed than applying your creativity and talent to making great, licensable music.

The question is: once you’ve made great music, how do you connect it to the decision makers who matter—and who’s out there to help you?

This panel brings you front and centre with the people and companies who have the relationships, experience, and networks to connect you and your music to real opportunities.

This includes sync agents, music libraries, labels, publishers, and emerging tech services that understand the needs of today’s decision makers.

They’ll discuss how they work, who they serve, what they look for when evaluating music to represent, what they expect from you—and what you should (and shouldn’t) expect from them.

Meet, eat and greet

During lunch on both days of Sync Summit LA, we’re putting the spotlight on you. Every attendee—both in-person and online—will get 60 seconds to introduce themselves and share a 30-second sample of their music (you’ll submit your sample before the event, and we’ll play it right after your intro).

It’s a fun, practical way to connect who you are and what you create with our speakers, sponsors, and fellow attendees.

2:15 PM – keynote

Afternoon Keynote – The Studio Side

The afternoon keynote will focus on storytelling from the studio perspective:
How do studios work with music—from the top level down to individual projects? What are their priorities? Who do they collaborate with? How do they manage their relationships with music companies and musicians? And how can you work with them?

The Principals of Preparation, presentation and Pitching: A Sync Summit Workshop

Presenting your music to decision makers in a professional manner—with good metadata, clear rights assignments, current contact information, and useful descriptive tagging—is crucial to your success in music for media.

The fact is, issues like bad metadata, inconsistent or missing rights confirmation, or poor communication can kill a deal before anyone even clicks your playlist link. These red flags signal that your music may be difficult to clear or use.

The good news is that by following a few basic processes and principles, you can confidently and consistently pitch and present your music professionally every time.

This panel brings together music supervisors and experienced industry professionals who will walk you through the steps you need to take to ensure your music is ready to present, how to strategically research, target, and contact decision makers, and how to follow up efficiently and effectively.

Sync Global, Sync Social: Expanding Opportunities in music licensing

This panel will zoom out beyond typical opportunities and markets to explore how you can work in global markets and social media campaigns.

First, let’s look at the global landscape. The most successful artists, agencies, labels, and publishers in sync don’t limit their pitching and outreach to North America—they go global.

Every major studio and streaming service is now producing series and films for major international markets, including East Asia, India, the Middle East, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Oceania.

And it’s not just TV/streaming and film—it’s games, ads, trailers, promos, and social media content as well.

Why is this important? Because a significant amount of the music used in these productions—about 30% from our experience—comes from artists and resources outside the local market.

Beyond that, there’s a major uptick in the use of music in social media campaigns for brands and content creators who need high-quality, cost-effective music for their reels, stories, and posts.

Podcasts also continue to grow into a solid business opportunity, representing yet another expanding market for your music.

This panel brings together global and social media music supervisors and other decision makers to discuss emerging opportunities in these markets, what they expect from you, and how you can connect your music to international and social media sync opportunities.

To wrap up the first day of the LA Sync Summit, we’re bringing together a showrunner, a music supervisor, and a composer for an inside look at how they join forces to shape a project’s musical identity. They’ll explore how they collaborate from the first spark of an idea to the final cut—and how they find and make the right music to bring stories to life.

Day 2

10:00 AM – Keynote

Morning Keynote: The ad/brand perspective – from ideation to execution – how does music music help market products and brands?

We’re kicking off day two with a deep dive into how music is sourced, integrated, and ultimately used in advertising and brand campaigns.

Agencies and brands rely on music to power their messaging. And while they’re telling a story—much like TV, streaming, and film—the purpose of that story is different: it’s designed to inspire you to buy a product and build an emotional connection with the brand.

Because of that, the mission is different—and so are the decision makers. There are usually more of them involved, and in many cases, music supervisors are brought in late in the process, or sometimes not at all.

This discussion will break down how agencies and brands use music, what they prioritize, who the decision makers actually are, and how you can successfully connect with them and work in advertising and brand campaigns.

Music, ads and brands:  How does the business work and how can you work with the business?

The way ad agencies and brands work with music is very different from any other area of media. To succeed in this space, you need to understand who the players are, what they expect, what they need, and how they collaborate with artists and music companies on a practical level.

This includes knowing why brands and agencies use music, understanding key industry terms like ideation and sonic branding, and recognizing the full range of music resources they rely on—from labels and custom music houses to artists, publishers, sync agents, music libraries, and more.

This panel brings together music supervisors and creative leaders from brands and ad agencies to discuss their process, their business, and how you can effectively engage with them and their projects.

BETTER, STRONGER, FASTER: How GOOD USE OF TECH CAN HELP YOU GET YOUR MUSIC SYNCED

So much of today’s conversation around music and technology is negative, but this panel will take a different approach: we’ll focus on how the smart use of technology can make you more efficient, help your music get discovered by decision makers, and increase your chances of getting synced.

From mastering to music discovery, the ethical application of AI is helping us categorize music, make it searchable, make it findable, and produce it more efficiently.

And beyond AI, as our industry has gone fully digital, tools for sync—like Disco and Bridge Audio—along with production, editing, and metadata-enhancement tools have transformed the way we work.

This panel will explore the smart, ethical use of technology to help music get made, get discovered, and get used in ways that allow you to operate and scale efficiently and successfully.

Music for sports, games and interactive platforms

Music for sports, video games, handheld games, VR, and apps all share one core mission: enhancing mostly non-scripted, non-linear content.

Whether it’s music for online games, esports, console titles, live sports events, TV/streaming coverage, or personalized player experiences, these uses are all about creating emotion, excitement, and impact.

This panel features speakers from game companies, the sports world, and interactive platforms who will discuss their unique music needs—and how you can potentially work with them on their projects.

Trailers and Promos – Creating and licensing music for marketing content

The mission of trailers and promos is to market content—and the music used in them is central to their impact.

Sound design, creative music editing, and overall musicality are crucial to making trailers and promos exciting, compelling, and actionable. The right music can transform a passive viewer into someone who streams a series, buys a ticket, or heads to the theater.

This panel features experts from trailer houses, network promo departments, and leading music creators who will break down how music for trailers and promos works—and where the opportunities are for you in this dynamic sector.
